This guide will show you exactly how to unlock every unlockable character within Mario Kart Wii. The Mario Kart Wii characters are divided into light, medium, and heavy; this determines which type of kart or bike the character can use. The characters also have slight differences among them (you may note slight statistic changes while trying different characters in the same vehicle). For instance, Baby Mario has a stat bonus to weight and handling over the similar light character Toad. The differences are very slight and shouldn’t deter you from choosing your favorites. You can check these by testing different characters inside the same vehicles.

How do you avoid the pow block?

You shake the wifi remote as the pow goes off. If it doesn't work the first time, keep trying, because it does work.

If you have a mushroom in first place and a blue spiny shell is coming for you, you can try to time your mushroom boost to narrowly dodge the blue shell's explosion (this also works with a golden mushroom).

Tips from our Readers
The advice in this section is based on the lived experiences of wikiHow readers like you. If you have a helpful tip you’d like to share on wikiHow, please submit it in the field below.
- For better chances, before you try to unlock a character, go to time trials and see which character works best for the cup you want to complete. For example, you might see that Luigi works best for Mushroom Cup.
- If you raced every time trial and can't seem to unlock Toadette, restart the game and then go back into your license. It won't inform you otherwise.
- Practice the manual driving if you haven't already. It will really improve how you race against other people.
