'Makes You Very Present': From Season 3 Star on Show's Terrifying Stakes (2)

Three seasons of From have put Tabitha Matthews through a lot. The MGM+ horror series has pulled Tabitha in new directions every season, and Season 3 has been her most challenging yet. The season premiere thrust her into a separate world -- literally -- and from that point on, she has had to unravel new mysteries, both supernatural and emotional. Now there's just one episode left, so will Tabitha and her family be able to survive it?

In an interview with CBR, From star Catalina Sandino Moreno discussed how the unpredictability of the show actually helps her as an actor. She also reflected on the journeys Tabitha has taken, both on her own and with her husband Jim. And she revealed the characters who have been the biggest influences on Tabitha, as she continues her exploration of everyone (and everything) in the town.

CBR: With the From Season 3 finale ahead, characters like Tian-Chen and Dale have already died, and it's seeming very likely that someone else will join them. How does it affect you as an actor to constantly be at risk of being killed off?

Catalina Sandino Moreno: I love it. I think it just makes you very present. It's kind of like life. You don't know what's going to happen tomorrow. You don't know what's going to happen in three weeks. You just have to live the present and be present.

And I think that's what makes this show fun, is that you don't know that you're going to survive another season. If you finish that season surviving, then you're good. And then let's hope that the next season [won't] kill you and there's not monsters coming in [to] kill you. It's a very unique way to working, which I don't mind.

In your previous interview with CBR, you discussed Tabitha's transition from being in the outside world to being back in the town. When she returned, things were not great between her and Jim. How would you describe the state of their marriage going into the finale?

To talk about my marriage in this season, I have to talk my marriage in the whole three seasons that we've been together. I don't know anyone that can say that divorce is an easy way out. I don't think anyone that has gone through something so traumatic as losing a child, and blaming each other and having these problems with their partner, [can] be like, "I'm done with you." It has to be a very tough decision. And then they find themselves stuck in this world that, the only reasonable thing to do is unite, and they do.

You see this couple go through ups and downs, and it's beautiful because that's how life works. I think that the big conflict in this couple is how rational Jim is with everything. He doesn't believe that she's seen monsters. He doesn't believe that there is something unnatural about this place, even though he has been part of that world for as long as they have been there.

And [then] she finds someone like Jade [Herrera], that believes that this place is bigger than them and they have to figure it out. They have to think outside the box... Jade is more superstitious. I think that's when they click, in that "Let's work together to figure this out."

Jim was a crucial part of figuring out the notes -- that the papers in the bottles are not words, they're not just random numbers, they're notes. The one who said that was Jim. If Jim would have stayed in that loop since the beginning, I think a lot of the trouble that they had as a couple wouldn't happen. But unfortunately it did.

From Season 3 has also given you even more screen time with Scott McCord as Victor. How would you describe the unique relationship that's formed between them, especially now that she's met Victor's father Henry and understands his history?

'Makes You Very Present': From Season 3 Star on Show's Terrifying Stakes (4)

Tabitha has always taken Victor as a role model. The way she talks to him is very tender, it's very motherly, it's very gentle. He is not the weirdo to her. She understands that he needs caring and love and tenderness, and I think that's why they're such good friends. It's just, it's going to be okay. We're together. Let's do this. Being a team in those moments of despair where people don't think clearly, they can slow down and trust each other, and that's a beautiful connection that they have.

It's lovely to have a character that you can just slow down [with], because Jade is a different pace. Victor is more, let's stop and let's think and let's be kind and everything is going to be okay. To have those characters energetically [differ], it makes your job fun to do. I love the different energies that characters give.

In some ways, Tabitha is a point of view character for the audience, as she was a newcomer to the town in the beginning, and she's exploring new things each season. How do you see her in From Season 3 compared to the character you started with?

'A Slow, Seething Panic': From's Elizabeth Saunders Tells Where Donna Goes Next

From star Elizabeth Saunders speaks to CBR about the toll Season 3 has taken on Donna Raines - and if there's a future for Donna beyond the town.

The first season, she was not that adventurous in trying to figure it out this place. She stayed home, just taking care of the house, and when she stayed home, she started digging down where her husband was going up. In Season 2, she started experiencing more [of] the unnatural of this place... And I think she started to understand. [At] the end of Season 1, she sees that the cable was not connected to anything. That's when she's like, this is something bigger than us.

In Season 3, I think she's more adventurous and she goes a little bit out of her way to be more active in trying to find a way to leave. You see the transition of being like, what is this? And then maybe I'm going to try this. When you have enough encounters with the supernatural, I think you just have to keep digging, but not the [normal] way everyone does. What if this is something bigger than us? And it is bigger than us, because we were not expecting a lot that happened this season.

You have to have that mindset, to be able to understand that's the kind of place that you're in. You're not going up or down. You're going sideways. And you have to be okay with that and to work in that place. That's why her and Jade are a great [pair] in discovering things. He goes with her ideas and she is now adopting his ideas. Let's try to do that. Let's go for it. Why not? So if we have Season 4, it's going to be very interesting to see that duo trying to find answers to all the questions that we'll have.
