Queen Consort Camilla is scheduled to be next to King Charles III during his coronation as the rightful king of England and the UK Commonwealth. Contrary to popular opinion, she will not be known as Queen Camilla but as Queen Consort Camilla. Before she took this title, there seemed to be some confusion amongst people who thought she would be known as Queen Camilla. This goes all the way back to when PRincess Diana of Wales was still alive and there was already speculation about this topic. But what was the confusion and how can we fix it?
Given that Princess Diana was actually married to Prince Charles back in the day, there was a general belief that she would be known as Queen Diana when her husband was crowned after his mother. People thought Queen Consort is a title only given to Camilla because she wasn't King Charles III's first wife. But this belief is completely wrong. The Queen Consort title is actually reserved for the spouse of the ruler regardless of the way they got together. What does this mean for Princess Kate from Wales?
Who can be known as the Queen?
To make it abundantly clear, Queen Elizabeth II is one of a few examples in which women were the rulers in England. They were the heirs to the throne and were recognizd as queens. Contrary to the cases of Kate Middleton in the future and Queen Consort Camilla right now. Both of them are married or partners of the next in line to the throne. This means that neither Camilla nor Kate will ever be known as Queen, only as Queen Consort. When William becomes king, that will be the title that awaits her.
